Thanksgiving Road Trip

The perfect escape for the Thanksgiving weekend.
A road trip to Canada.
I love that I can leave our house, and 2.5 hours later cross a big bridge,
and be in French speaking territory!!

Although the drive to the big cities and hotels was a lot longer than the 2.5 hours, it is just fun being there and seeing road signs in metrics.

We noticed right away how the locals adapt with temporary garages - custom made with windows, cubicles for rubbish bins and even walkways all the way to the front door.
We saw a lot of snow!

and Christmas lights

                                                           lovely treats everywhere

I really wanted to order a whole buche de Noel,
but settled for a slice instead

chocolate bonbons - I carried 10 of those boxes on the metro back to the hotel, it was a balancing act!!..for small place setting gifts at an upcoming Christmas dinner.
                                                        oh yes...lots of macarons too!

Oh Sapin de Noel

I bought two bunches of the red twigs used in decorations everywhere in Europe and I now see also in Quebec.....my front door arrangement will look very European this year...oui?

le Metro is very organised - and a warm break from the cold
traffic control painted on the platform
"The bikes go into the first car"
from le Metro we rode a bus up the Mount Royal (from where Montreal got it's name)

at the top, a chateau where you can warm up by a fire

after Montreal we headed to Quebec City and enjoyed a couple of days in Old town

a short ferry ride across the St Lawrence river -
have always wanted a ride on an ice-breaker!!
watching this crew row on the ice was entertaining!

old town streets lined with lovely shops
I was so very tempted to join him for a photo -
                                           that raccoon skin looked warm!!
                                                                   more eye candy

Donkey in a can...donkey milk - a whole store devoted to it.

The Christmas market was a must -
here I had to sample some hot spiced wine and a crepe with marron glace.
my hair looks like a fur collar... it has since been cut off!!
and some final shots of this lovely city
(sled track - used during the winter festival in Feb)

always leave room in your suitcase for some extra treats.

One last Canadian meal before leaving the metric road signs behind.
Found everywhere, "Poutine" we got ours at the A&W chain:
French fries with gravy and cheese curds....not so yum!!

A Grand Prix - Vintage Style

The Grand Prix Festival in Watkins Glen,
A post for Dad
we walked the walk of fame

                                                          we saw the checkered flag
                                                          walked among the greats

The Mini - many many dozens of them.

We absorbed the ambiance of the recreated 1948-52 Watkins Glen street races.
A tribute to the original races using the original 6.6 mile route.
the roar was huge.

                                                     some Aussie accents were heard
                                                         there was plenty of merchandise

and a town proud of its history
Sunday we go to the race track and watch the real races.
